Our Organization

The Michif Language Revitalization Circle is a registered charity based in British Columbia, Canada.  It was founded to advance the revitalization of the Michif language by further developing and promoting the Coloured Syllable Phonetic Learning System.

Our office is located on the unceded traditional lands of the Lekwungen people and Scianew (Beecher Bay) First Nation, whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day.

Mission Statement

We are members and friends of the Métis Nation, with the objective of restoring the self-identity of Métis people by revitalizing the Michif language and culture.

Vision

  • Following traditional Michif values, beliefs, and practices, we will develop curriculum for, promote, and revitalize Heritage Michif language utilizing the 2019 Coloured Syllable Phonetic Learning System (CSPLS).

  • Restore the self-identification of our people by revitalizing Michif language and culture in collaboration with other local, provincial, and national Métis communities and organizations.

  • Petition the government of British Columbia to recognize Michif as an official Indigenous language in BC.

  • Our philosophy and actions will be ‘For the Michif People, By the Michif People’ as recommended by the Truth & Reconciliation Commission, Calls to Action, Language & Culture, Section 14, Sub-section iv.; “The preservation, revitalization, and strengthening of Aboriginal languages and cultures are best managed by Aboriginal people and communities”.
